From Plovdiv Centre
Youth Hill is only about 1–2 km from the centre. From the square in front of the Ancient Theatre or the Old Town, it is a 15–25 minute walk along Lyuben Karavelov Street.
From the Airport
Plovdiv Airport is about 12 km from the centre. Take a taxi or a bus to the centre, then continue on foot or by city transport.
From the Central Station
The distance from the Central Station is about 2 km. Take a city bus to the "Youth Hill" stop or a taxi (5–7 minutes).
Public Transport
The "Youth Hill" stop on Lyuben Karavelov Street is served by bus lines 17, 20, 24 and 26. Check current schedules on the Plovdiv City Transport website.
Walking

What It Is
Youth Hill is the highest of Plovdiv's seven hills, at about 300 m above sea level. It is also known as Djendem Tepe and appears on Google Maps as "Hill of Youth" (Хълм на младостта). The hill is covered in dense forest and is a protected natural landmark – the first of Plovdiv's hills to receive this status.
History & Name
The hill was a venerated place in antiquity – archaeological research has revealed traces of a Thracian sanctuary and a Roman temple of Apollo. The name "Youth Hill" dates from the socialist period, when volunteers built the paths and stairways that still lead to the top today.
Nature & Biodiversity
The steep rock slopes and the microclimate influenced by the Maritsa river keep parts of the hill untouched by human activity. Rare plant and animal species thrive here, making it a valuable natural pocket in the centre of Plovdiv.

The best-known attraction is the kids' railway – a narrow-gauge line (600 mm) opened in 1979 and running again since 2007, which passes through the forest with a small bridge and a 50-metre tunnel. From the top you get a panorama of the whole city – the Ancient Theatre, the Old Town and Plovdiv's hills – with the Rhodope mountains to the south. It is one of the best places in Plovdiv for sunset photography.

From a sanctuary to an early Christian basilica
HistoryIn antiquity the summit was a sacred place – a sanctuary of Apollo Kendrisius with a bronze statue once stood there. Later an early Christian three-nave basilica was built on top of it, one of many proofs of the hill's long sacred history.
How the hill got its name "Youth Hill"
HistoryThe name comes from the brigadier afforestation of 1948, when youth brigades planted trees on the then-bare hill. Its older names date from the Ottoman period: Dzhenem Tepe ("hell hill"), Djin Tepe ("hill of the spirits") and Chigdem Tepe ("hill of the crocuses").
The dark fame of Dzhenem Tepe
LegendThe name "Dzhenem" (from the Turkish cehennem – hell) is tied to many legends about the hill's dark past – from ancient sacrifices to rumours of secret tunnels beneath the hill. Local historian Vidiu Sukarev has also commented on the dark fame of Youth Hill in the media. Other traditions call the place "the hill of the dryads" – the nymphs of the forests.
The "Pioneer" kids' railway – from 1979 to today
HistoryThe narrow-gauge railway (600 mm gauge) opened on 23 September 1979 to mark the International Year of the Child. The line was built in just 156 days using rails from the Kočerinovo–Rila Monastery line, some of them still stamped "1923". The route is about 1 km long with a small bridge, a level crossing and a 50-metre tunnel, passing the stops "Pioneer", "Snow White" and "Panorama". After it closed in 1997, the railway reopened on 22 September 2007 – exactly 28 years after the first opening.
The first protected hill of Plovdiv
HistoryAs early as 1970, 30 hectares of the southern slope were declared a protected area, and in 1995 the whole hill became a natural landmark – the first of Plovdiv's hills with such status. The steep cliffs and the microclimate of the Maritsa river shelter rare plant and animal species.
The sunset hill
TipLocals call Youth Hill "the sunset hill" – from its western slope the sun slowly sets over the Rhodope mountains and the city glows in warm light. The golden hour before sunset is the best time for a walk and photos.
